Ideas

If you are interested in taking part have a look at the questions below and think about how you would respond to one or more of them. You can do this with short video documentaries with a duration of 90 seconds to 3 minutes.

If you find yourself limited by technology, slideshows or photo essays of 10-15 images with short captions will be accepted.

Guidelines for Good Videos

Good videos will tell us something about the student experience by including context and analysis on an issue affecting students. They will demonstrate good journalistic instincts and tell a compelling story. They will take full advantage of film’s visual nature by showing the issue. Creative and artistic submissions are encouraged, so long as they are factual.

Throughout the year, we will be posting examples and further guidelines on the blog. You should also check our pages of resources and soundtracks.

Suggested Topics

  • How do you and other students study?
  • What aspirations do you and others around you have about university? To what extent are these fulfilled?
  • Outside study, what activities do students pursue in groups?
  • How does your university relate to its community? How should it?
  • How can a student or a university go wrong, and what can you do about it?
  • What is university like for minority groups?
  • How does your university experience shape your views on religion, society, and other ways of life?
  • What are daily living conditions like for you and other students, as you pay the bills, study, and relate to others?

Soundtracks

Although sounds from the environment you’re showcasing can make a fascinating audio backdrop for your video, we recognize that you may wish to give your video a soundtrack. UniLives.com cannot publish videos with soundtracks that you do not have copyright permission to use. So we will be working in partnership with Magnatune.com, an internet music label,  to make some of their albums available for you to use in your soundtracks.
